Defend a Free Press
Add your name in defense of press freedom. Show your support! Minnesota Public Radio has joined news and media organizations in a friend-of-the-court brief supporting the First Amendment principles at issue in the legal challenge to restrictions on White House press access. Our position is straightforward: government should not determine which journalists have access based on whether it approves of their reporting. A free and independent press must be able to ask questions, gather information and report on those in power without fear that critical coverage will result in losing access. That principle does not depend on the administration in office, the news organization involved or its editorial point of view. This matters to Minnesotans. White House press access and pool reporting help news organizations across the country, including MPR, provide audiences with timely, independent information about the actions of their government. MPR is committed to rigorous, independent journalism and to the First Amendment protections that make that work possible. We are joining this brief because those protections belong to a free press and, ultimately, serve the public.
